Codreanu’s Origins and His Training

And, gentlemen, who was the man that always assumed to represent Romanian nationalism, even reserving the national sentiments for himself? Where did he come from? What does this man represent? What personal value did he have? What high worth and qualities did he have, when he felt entitled to denigrate a whole generation which, no matter what others would say, prepared the bright future of this country, by fulfilling the millennial national ideal? A generation that bled on so many war battlefields? Who is this man who presumes this?

Interestingly, Honorary Court, we must pause on this subject for a bit. We must know the man!

Corneliu was born in 1899, his parents being Ion Zelinski and Eliza, born Brauner. I won’t talk now about this family’s genealogy. I won’t tell you who are the ancestors of Zelinski. I won’t speak about the Condac and Antec families. I won’t analyze the racial or ethnic purity of these families. But I will mention two precise and incontestable facts. First, at the birth of the defendant, his father’s name was Zelinski. Therefore, Corneliu’s name was Corneliu Zelinski, which is the name he received in his birth certificate. Only two years later, in 1901, the father Zelinski requested to have his name changed to Codreanu — a change which, of course, would be passed on to his son as well. This is one fact. The second fact. When Corneliu was born, his father didn’t have Romanian citizenship.65 Therefore, his son was a foreign citizen. Only four years later, in 1903, Zelinski, after having his name changed to Codreanu, requests and obtains his Romanian citizenship through a special law on the 24th of March of that year. We don’t know in what circumstances was this citizenship obtained. Of course, we all know how easy it was to pass these laws through the Parliament, and most times these things were done as favors. Today we can complain about how easy was to work in this field. And today we have a list of conditions on which the Romanian citizenship was obtained in this case. But we won’t talk about that now. Therefore, Corneliu Codreanu was the son of Zelinski, who was a foreign citizen at the time of his birth.

Mr. Senior President and Honorary Court, we must highlight something regarding this matter, which is quite odd. No matter Codreanu’s origin, his documents are Romanian. His mysticism, obscurantism that he shows, the acts of cruelty that he personally committed or inspired, the death threats against his enemies, women, or children, none of these have a Romanian character. The Romanian has an open nature, is happy, and eager to live his life, the Romanian is kind. These characteristics are part of organic or congenital foreignism, or of a randomly borrowed foreignism, but it is obvious that the son of Zelinski and of Eliza Brauner, brought to Romania foreign actions and habits, that are foreign to the soul of our nation.

But, Honorary Court, what is the
